A night Alone

“A Night Alone”

The sky was pitch black, the house was creaking, and I still had four hours until my parents got home. Locked in my parents’ room, I turned on the TV full blast so I wouldn’t hear the creaking house.

I barely heard the phone ring. I picked it up and said, “Hello … hello …?” but there was no response. I knew someone was on the other end. Finally, I hung up. A minute later, the phone rang again; still no one was there. I became more frightened as time passed; the same person called five more times.

At this point I didn’t bother picking up, but the ringing continued. To get my mind off this prank caller, I called my friend. She told me not to worry and to turn the phone off. As we talked, I heard someone pull into the driveway. When I peeked out the window, I saw an unfamiliar car.

Thirty minutes passed and the car was still in my driveway. It drove up and down the drive as if aware I was watching. My friend told me to call the cops, but I refused.

Soon the phone calls started again. I heard noises in the background, but I couldn’t tell what they were. I really didn’t want that person to get out of the car and start toward the house. If they did, I didn’t know what I’d do. None of the doors were locked, and I would have no way of protecting myself. The only thing I could do was hide, which wasn’t a very good plan.

At this point I was considering calling the cops, but my friend offered to drive by. “Maybe if they see me pull in, they will leave,” she suggested. By the time she arrived, the car had left. The phone rang again and I picked up, thinking it might be my friend. Someone on the other end said “Bye-bye.”

At that point I wasn’t as scared. Since then I have not stayed home alone and I probably never will.

Editorial

“Depression”
The increasing amount of time children are spending on computers at home and school has become big problem in the lives of children. Researchers feel that the use of computer technology may make a difference in their lives, from helping with homework , causing depression to encouraging violent behavior. Research suggests, that access to computers increases the total amount of time children spend in front of a television or computer screen at the expense of other activities, thereby putting them at risk for obesity. At the same time, cognitive research suggests that playing computer games can be an important building block to computer literacy because it enhances children's ability to read and visualize images in three-dimensional space and track multiple images simultaneously. The limited evidence available also indicates that home computer use is linked to slightly better academic performance.
There are more mixed feelings, however, regarding the effects on children's social development. Although little evidence indicates that the moderate use of computers to play games has a negative impact on children's friendships and family relationships, survey ‘s data show that increased use of the Internet may be related to increases in loneliness and depression. Of most concern are the findings that playing violent computer games may increase aggressiveness and desensitize a child to suffering, and that the use of computers may blur a child's ability to distinguish real life from simulation. It has also been said that that more systematic research is needed in these areas to help parents and policymakers maximize the positive effects and to minimize the negative effects of home computers in children's lives.

What can be done to help save jobs?

I dont think there is much we as the people can do right now to help save jobs. i honestly think its really up to the government and business's that suffered loss over the years to get back in good standing or to get back to that finacial stabability where they would be able to offer more job oppertunities for the people.

I think its just important for the people to stay strong and just hold out for whatever may come their way because it is defnately not going to be this bad all the time. I might might get worst before it gets better but it will eventually get better.

"Evolution as fact and theory"

1. Gould defines facts as the "world data" and refers to observing an apple fall from the tree as Isaac Newton is alleged to have done. Identify some of the facts Gould present as evidence to suport the theory of evolution.
* "perfection covers the tracks of past history, and past history the evidence of descent- is our mark of evolution, evolution. lies exposed in the imperfections that record a hitory of descent.
* "fossils that are not common, and shouldn't be. but not because of our understanding of evolution.
* Paragraph 17.* "the etymology of september, october, november, december ( seven, eight, ninth, and tenth, we know that two additional ones must be added to an original calendar of ten months."

2. Gould defines theories as "structures of ideas that exsplain and interrupt facts," such as Newton's theory of gravitation, which was introduced to exsplain the facts like falling apples. In addition to facts, Gould states, the theory of evolution is supported by reasonable inferences that he sites as evidence.
paragraph 16 (months) & Paragraph 17 (humans)

3.Gould begins this essay with allutions to the scopes trial of 1925, Darrow, and Bryan. He seems to assume that his readers will know what he is talking about. If you know about this event, how does this refrence set the scene for his 1981 essay? If you dont know about it, was your understanding reduced.
I think that he's exsplaining or showing something that is really important for him and for the person that he was in this part of history.
