A night Alone

“A Night Alone”

The sky was pitch black, the house was creaking, and I still had four hours until my parents got home. Locked in my parents’ room, I turned on the TV full blast so I wouldn’t hear the creaking house.

I barely heard the phone ring. I picked it up and said, “Hello … hello …?” but there was no response. I knew someone was on the other end. Finally, I hung up. A minute later, the phone rang again; still no one was there. I became more frightened as time passed; the same person called five more times.

At this point I didn’t bother picking up, but the ringing continued. To get my mind off this prank caller, I called my friend. She told me not to worry and to turn the phone off. As we talked, I heard someone pull into the driveway. When I peeked out the window, I saw an unfamiliar car.

Thirty minutes passed and the car was still in my driveway. It drove up and down the drive as if aware I was watching. My friend told me to call the cops, but I refused.

Soon the phone calls started again. I heard noises in the background, but I couldn’t tell what they were. I really didn’t want that person to get out of the car and start toward the house. If they did, I didn’t know what I’d do. None of the doors were locked, and I would have no way of protecting myself. The only thing I could do was hide, which wasn’t a very good plan.

At this point I was considering calling the cops, but my friend offered to drive by. “Maybe if they see me pull in, they will leave,” she suggested. By the time she arrived, the car had left. The phone rang again and I picked up, thinking it might be my friend. Someone on the other end said “Bye-bye.”

At that point I wasn’t as scared. Since then I have not stayed home alone and I probably never will.

Editorial

“Depression”
The increasing amount of time children are spending on computers at home and school has become big problem in the lives of children. Researchers feel that the use of computer technology may make a difference in their lives, from helping with homework , causing depression to encouraging violent behavior. Research suggests, that access to computers increases the total amount of time children spend in front of a television or computer screen at the expense of other activities, thereby putting them at risk for obesity. At the same time, cognitive research suggests that playing computer games can be an important building block to computer literacy because it enhances children's ability to read and visualize images in three-dimensional space and track multiple images simultaneously. The limited evidence available also indicates that home computer use is linked to slightly better academic performance.
There are more mixed feelings, however, regarding the effects on children's social development. Although little evidence indicates that the moderate use of computers to play games has a negative impact on children's friendships and family relationships, survey ‘s data show that increased use of the Internet may be related to increases in loneliness and depression. Of most concern are the findings that playing violent computer games may increase aggressiveness and desensitize a child to suffering, and that the use of computers may blur a child's ability to distinguish real life from simulation. It has also been said that that more systematic research is needed in these areas to help parents and policymakers maximize the positive effects and to minimize the negative effects of home computers in children's lives.

What can be done to help save jobs?

I dont think there is much we as the people can do right now to help save jobs. i honestly think its really up to the government and business's that suffered loss over the years to get back in good standing or to get back to that finacial stabability where they would be able to offer more job oppertunities for the people.

I think its just important for the people to stay strong and just hold out for whatever may come their way because it is defnately not going to be this bad all the time. I might might get worst before it gets better but it will eventually get better.

"Evolution as fact and theory"

1. Gould defines facts as the "world data" and refers to observing an apple fall from the tree as Isaac Newton is alleged to have done. Identify some of the facts Gould present as evidence to suport the theory of evolution.
* "perfection covers the tracks of past history, and past history the evidence of descent- is our mark of evolution, evolution. lies exposed in the imperfections that record a hitory of descent.
* "fossils that are not common, and shouldn't be. but not because of our understanding of evolution.
* Paragraph 17.* "the etymology of september, october, november, december ( seven, eight, ninth, and tenth, we know that two additional ones must be added to an original calendar of ten months."

2. Gould defines theories as "structures of ideas that exsplain and interrupt facts," such as Newton's theory of gravitation, which was introduced to exsplain the facts like falling apples. In addition to facts, Gould states, the theory of evolution is supported by reasonable inferences that he sites as evidence.
paragraph 16 (months) & Paragraph 17 (humans)

3.Gould begins this essay with allutions to the scopes trial of 1925, Darrow, and Bryan. He seems to assume that his readers will know what he is talking about. If you know about this event, how does this refrence set the scene for his 1981 essay? If you dont know about it, was your understanding reduced.
I think that he's exsplaining or showing something that is really important for him and for the person that he was in this part of history.

Is the earth round or flat?

Question of active reading.

1. Using the active reader technique from chapter 2, read thew first and last paragraph of this article. Now that you have read the entire article, would you say that the technique gave you a good preview? In my opinion i would say it does. it has questions of interpretation, analysis and evaluates; according to chapter 2 these are important things that this text has and its good idea to have them because the type of information.

2.Why is it important to know that Lightman is a scientist? would an artist or a social worker write about this subject in this way? //I think they would, I believe that they want the audience to know that he's a scientist because it would make what he's saying sound more realistic, and i believe that if we knew that it was not a scientist we probably take the text or article like just a reading and wouldn't take it on.

3.Where is lightman using a lighthearted tone? identify some phrases that show this. where is he serious? Identify some phrases that show this?

In these examples lightman's tone was very light hearted and sarcastic to was .and sometimes when i read this it makes me think that the way he says the stuff is an a tone that shows that he is jealous or has envy or what others did and he didn't.

- Paragraph 5: "with little scrabbling on a piece of paper you an see that those observations imply around earth."
- Paragraph 7: " there is no question that many people believe the earth was round, I wonder how many knew this"
- Paragraph 10: "i suspect that they're quite of few items you take on faith, even important thing you could verify without much trouble"

Youth vote is in, and it says Obama will win

1940, student voters have accurately picked all but Laura T. Coffey of the TODAYShow.com contributor updated 10:05 a.m.ET, Tues., Oct. 14, 2008

Kids across America have got the 2008 presidential election all figured out.
In a poll of a quarter of a million students who are too young to vote, Democratic nominee Barack Obama sailed to victory with 57 percent of the vote while Republican nominee John McCain received 39 percent.
It may be easy to dismiss the poll — orchestrated every four years by Scholastic, children’s publishing and media company — as mere child’s play. But here’s the uncanny thing about this educational exercise: Since 1940, student voters have accurately chosen all but two presidents.
The two off-base years were 1948, when students picked Thomas Dewey over Harry Truman, and 1960, when they chose Richard Nixon over John F. Kennedy.
“Dewey-Truman was really close … and newspapers got that wrong, too,” noted Suzanne Freeman, executive editor of Scholastic Kids Press Corps and Scholastic News Online.
And officials with Scholastic like to point out that students cast their votes for Nixon and JFK before the first televised debate between those two candidates proved to be such a key turning point in that election.
Why so accurate?
The election poll, conducted through paper ballots found in Scholastic’s classroom magazines and online at Scholastic News Online, was open to all elementary, middle and high school students across the United States. The poll opened at the start of the school year and closed on Oct. 10. Most voters were in the third through eighth grades and ranged in age from about 8 to about 13.
“It’s important to let kids have a voice,” Freeman said. “It helps prepare them for when they’re older and they do get the vote … It makes them feel more entitled to knowing what’s going on in an election.”
How do such young people consistently pick the right candidate? Scholastic officials say they’re likely mirroring what they hear their parents talking about at home — to a point, at least.
“Kids are more excited about this election than they were in the last two,” Freeman said. “They’re following it closer, and I think we may be getting more of what the kids really think …
“I’m sure a lot of it still reflects what they’re hearing at home because kids are like that … but these kids are much more involved.”
Scholastic introduced online voting for the first time in 2000. This year Scholastic was careful to include a variety of filters on its Web site to prevent adults from weighing in and skewing the results.
Millions of young people have cast their votes for the next president since Scholastic began giving them the opportunity to do so in 1940.
In the recent past, students chose George W. Bush over John Kerry and Al Gore in 2004 and 2000 — meaning that in 2000, student voters still got it right even though they didn’t reflect the result of the popular vote.
Write-ins and swing states
This year saw the highest percentage of write-in votes in the history of the poll, with 4 percent of students voting for other candidates. Write-ins included Sen. Hillary Clinton, Congressman Ron Paul, Independent candidate Ralph Nader and a smattering of votes for TV personality Stephen Colbert.
Obama swept both his home state and McCain’s, garnering 67 percent of the vote in Illinois and 54 percent in Arizona. McCain received 30 percent of the vote in Illinois and 42 percent in Arizona.
Here is a look at how students voted for McCain and Obama in key swing states:

• Colorado: McCain, 61 percent; Obama, 36 percent
• Florida: McCain, 41 percent; Obama, 55 percent
• Indiana: McCain, 51 percent; Obama, 47 percent
• Iowa: McCain, 48 percent; Obama, 49 percent
• Michigan: McCain, 40 percent; Obama, 57 percent
• Missouri: McCain, 49 percent; Obama, 47 percent
• Ohio: McCain, 47 percent; Obama, 51 percent
• Pennsylvania: McCain, 46 percent; Obama, 50 percent

1. Do you think it makes sense to let children have a Mock Election or election, or is it just child’s play?
2. Do you think children between the ages of 8-13 actually know what their talking about or do you think there just getting it from adults, parents, or people in the community?
3. Do you think that it’s accurate to say that children can actually pick the right candidate for the presidential election?

Project 1 Revised

When I was about 14 years old it was said that a hurricane name Georges was going to hit the Virgin Islands. This was nothing new or of surprise because we experienced hurricanes all the time. It was all over the news, “Hurricane Georges heading toward the V.I. at a category two”. As usual everyone boarded up all their windows and doors. My family had tripled the work because my father owned apartments so he had to board those up as well. After a long night of waiting patiently for the storm, nothing came. Everyone was inflamed. The same day we took the boards off of all the windows of the apartments as well as the house. After a long days work we turned on the television and heard that the storm had turned around and would hit us in a couple of hours but this time as a category four.We quickly hurried back outside in fear because we had already packed away the boards. After we got them back out my father decided to do the apartments first because the house was stronger, by this time the wind had already began to get stronger. It was even harder than the first time because the force of the wind shifted the boards making them extremely difficult to screw down. When we got to the last apartment it had already began thunder, lightening, and rain. By the time we got back it was too, late leaving no time to put the boards on our house. My mother with furious but came to the conclusion that it would have been too dangerous to go outside and try to do it.By this time it was really bad, we were all huddled up in one room waiting for it to be over. After a while of creaking noises we suddenly heard a crash, we ran to see what was happening and realized that a piece of the neighbors’ roof flew straight into one of the windows in the house. A few moments later a gust of wind suddenly came through the window and suddenly peeled the roof off of our house. In fright and discomposure, we took some towels and sheets out of the closet and placed them on the floor sealing the room off preventing water from running all around the house. After that point we all found our self under the dining room table. After a long night of trying to keep calm and warm the storm was finally over. After my parents said it was safe we all went outside to see what it was like. I was shocked there were trees everywhere not to mentions peoples things like televisions, lamps, table, beds, dressing tables, microwaves, and everything you could think of. Shortly after we all got in the truck and drove to see the apartments. As we came closer I could see the fear in my parents eyes because there were trees on peoples car as well as telephone poles on others houses. When we got to the houses we were shocked and surprised to see that nothing happen to them when the house right next to it was practically gone, everyone was devastated. I even remember on the radio someone saying a rhyme that said, “Hurricane Georges came through the back door at a category four”. When we got back to our house my father, brother, and I quickly put a cover over the roof to prevent any further water damage while my mother and my sister got the inside of the house back in order. After a couple hard weeks of labor the roof was back on, and besides no current. Unlike everyone else our home was some what back to normal. This experience thought me never to take anything for granted, always be thankful. If you think you have it bad look at the person next to you and you will see that they will almost always have it worst than you. Also, if the person next to you is doing better than you never be jealous them because you never know what they had to go through to get where they are.

Chapter 6 Questions

1. How would you revise the essay?· I revise my project number 1. Putting more information like why do I believe in it, why people believe in this, and how did it happen, how does this believe develop in life’s, what type of impact does it have, and what is the important thing about it. In audience, I make sure that the essay is clear and concise with the ideas and that it may be a topic that the reader would feel familiar with. Structure is the most important part in the essay, because everything has to go in the right place, at the right time, and with the right words. The development is kind of open and just gives you the idea straight up. And the voice is trying to open the eyes and give the reader an idea of what they have to be concern and open mind it about.2. Reread:· When I reread my essay I found some mistakes in the punctuation that when they weren’t there the text was kind of confusing.3. Quotes:· Yes it does. It makes me think that the person is actually talking and expressing himself in the text. And it’s helpful to understand the examples that are being expose in the text.I think quotes are one of the important things in a text, because when you have quotes you give life to the text, you show that someone is with you, or helps to express the moment more clearly.

In this essay, Orwell suggests that the English language is on the decline because the people who use English are misusing the language. What sort of things does he mention as proof that the English language is in trouble?

-· I think that he is saying that thoughts are foolish and people sometimes have a lot of foolish thoughts, and try to imitate others. Those are sometimes big mistakes to make.

Orwell wrote this essay almost 60 years ago. Do you think the English language is in a better or worse condition than when Orwell wrote his essay?

No. I think English still the same thing or probably worst. Now days people use
English in short sentences like: cuz: because, gonna: going to, and like he
Said these type of things still around because of imitation.

Can you think of modern examples of how people misuse language?

Orwell puts two examples of bad writing which had a lot to do with the bad use of English, he says how people never finish to write their thoughts, or they just write stuff not thinking of the facts, and what is written has to make s sense.

What do you think of Orwell’s list of rules to improve your writing?

·
For now days he’s rules or tips are not going to be to helpful, but I think that they are very good rules that we have to keep in mind all the time when we are writing.probably number 3 can help, because sometimes people and even me, put words In the text that they’re really more that what you need to explain the thought.

Orwell wrote the following in the provided excerpt:

Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possible and get one's meaning as clear as one can through pictures and sensations. Afterward one can choose -- not simply accept -- the phrases that will best cover the meaning, and then switch round and decide what impressions one's words are likely to make on another person.

What do you think he means when he suggests that one should focus on “pictures and sensations” before one sits down to put words on the page?
Have you ever done this? Does it help you write better?

I think he’s trying to put the sensation and the picture as the biggest thought that are not organize and he wants to re-organize them like that they can be a sensation when you put them in a picture or let’s say the paper in this case

“What Goes Around Comes Around”

The phrase, "what goes around comes around," is a very widely used phrase used not only by parents to children, but as a somewhat threat towards someone who has done you wrong, or hurt you in any way. Despite the length of the phrase, "what goes around comes around," basically falls deeply into the term of Karma.
Karma is one of those words we don't translate. Its basic meaning is simple enough, action, but because of the weight the Buddha's teachings give to the role of action, the Sanskrit word karma packs in so many implications that the English word action can't carry its entire luggage. This is why we've simply airlifted the original word into our vocabulary.
But when we try unpacking the connotations the word carries now that has arrived in everyday usage, we find that most of its luggage has gotten mixed up in transit. In the eyes of most Americans, karma functions like fate bad fate. At that, an inexplicable, unchangeable force coming out of our past, for which we are somehow vaguely responsible and powerless to fight. "I guess it's just my karma," I've heard people sigh when bad fortune strikes with such force that they see no alternative to resign acceptance. The fatalism implicit in this statement is one reason why so many of us are repelled by the concept of karma, for it sounds like the kind of callous myth-making that can justify almost any kind of suffering or injustice in the status quo: "If he's poor, it's because of his karma." "If she's been raped, it's because of her karma." From this it seems a short step to saying that he or she deserves to suffer, and so doesn't deserve our help. I believe that we need beliefs like karma, I can’t even begin to imagine how we would act if there was no religious or cosmic justice for how we act. We as humans already go about our lives doing what we please knowing that there are consequences for our actions and still do what we want. The word karma leads the phrase “what goes around comes around” which is also followed by the related phrases “what goes up must come down”, “live by the sword die by the blade” and, “ If you make the bed be prepared to sleep in it”. In my opinion they are all tied up into the golden rule which states “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. I believe karma in the world of today has a very simple definition to us, and we don’t rely as strongly on it as other cultures do. For example, a female singer Alicia Keys sang a song entitled “Karma” as well as a male artist name Justin Timberlake who sang a song entitled “What Goes Around Comes Around”. This shows that it’s just a saying or a phrase rather than a way of life. From the standpoint of karma, though, where we come from is old karma, over which we have no control. What we are is a nebulous concept at best and pernicious at worst, when we use it to find excuses for acting on unskillful motives. The worth of a tribe lies only in the skillful actions of its individual members. Even when those good people belong to our tribe, their good karma is theirs, not ours. And, of course, every tribe has its bad members, which means that the mythology of the tribe is a fragile thing. To hang onto anything fragile requires a large investment of passion, aversion, and delusion, leading inevitably to more unskillful actions on into the future.
Karma is the concept in Hinduism which explains casualties through a system where beneficial effects are derived from post beneficial actions and harmful effects from post harmful actions. Creating a system of actions and reactions taught a person’s reincarnated life. Karma literally means deed or act and more broadly names the universal principle of cause and effect, action and reaction, which Hindus believes govern all life. I firmly believe that if Americans followed this same principle along with the ones that we already have the United States would be a much better place. I also believe that believing in karma would affect one's moral outlook and one’s sense of responsibility because if people believe that their prosperity and happiness lies in their hands, they would be more likely to do what they feel is right. It is believed that only beings that can distinguish between right and wrong such as adults and humans can accumulate karma. Animals and small children are not responsible and cannot accumulate karma as they are incapable of discriminating between right and wrong.
Karma is not fate. Humans are believed to act with free will creating their own destinies. For example, if an individual sows goodness, he or she will reap goodness. If he or she sows evil, he or she will reap evil. Karma refers to the totality of mankind’s reactions and the concomitant reaction in current and previous lives all of which is determined by the future, however many karmas do not have an immediate effect, some accumulate and return unexpectedly in an individual’s later life. The contrast of karma has believed to lie in intelligent action and dispassionate reaction.
Karma is the action of doing, any kind of intentional action whether mental or physical is regarded as karma. It covers all that’s included in the phrase "thought, word, or deed," generally speaking all good and bad action constitutes karma. There are many quotes and saying that people use when referring to karma some of them being. “How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours”. By Wayne Dyer, “There are the waves and there is the wind, seen and unseen forces. Everyone has these same elements in their lives, the seen and unseen, karma and free will.” By Kuan Yin and, “Who so ever diggeth the pit shall fall therein.” (By: Proverb).
All in all there is one concept that could sum up everything that was just said. To help you make wise decisions and wise actions, you must always remember that whatever you do always try to do well. Always put your best effort in someone or something that you know you are responsible for. Forsake that past and go on with the future. Don’t let what happen before in life that you regret contribute to who you are today. Try to live to that best of your ability! And always remember if you sow bad fruits, your will reap bad fruits, but if you sow good fruits there is always good that comes out of it.

You've identified a belief system (karma) and juxtaposed it with a common phrase ("what goes around comes around"). This is interesting because I don't think people who use this phrase would necessarily think that they believe in karma. This could easily give you a nice opening line--something about most people not knowing they're part Hindu. The challenge now is to develop your own perspective on karma that goes beyond defining it. You've got several different statements about what karma is, but you've got to get to why this matters. Who cares that some people believe in karma. What’s your perspective on it? What do you want to point out about believing in it? What reasons do people have for believing in it? In what situations do we tell ourselves "what goes around comes around"?Here are a few questions to get you thinking about why believing in karma matters: - how does believing in karma affect one's moral outlook? One’s sense of responsibility?- How strict is karma? If something bad happens to someone, do you assume they did something wrong (in a previous life?)?- Who/what enforces karma? Does one have to believe in a god? In nature? In cosmic balance?- How is believing in karma different from believing in an afterlife where you get punished or rewarded?- would Americans act differently if they believed in karma?- Why do we need beliefs like karma? How would we act if there was no religious or cosmic justice for how we act? Where do atheists get their morals? - Is it true, as Voltaire said, that "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him?" If we have karma, do we need God?These are just a few ways you can develop your sense of why thinking more deeply about karma is important. As you rewrite, you also need to acknowledge sources. There's a lot of "patch-writing" here--sentences taken from other sources and strung together with no acknowledgement of the original source (in other words, parts of this essay are currently plagiarized).I look forward to seeing the revised draft Posts

" Did The Trooper Do It"

In The News #7......

In my opinion I would like to give the Trooper the benifit of the doubt because I strongly believe that a person with no feeling toward someone would just want to hurt another person. But on the the other hand the way that the world is today, andything is possible. People do things for no reason all the time. So if the trooper does turn out to be gulity it wouldnt be that suprising.

Questions.....

1. Who is speaking in this momologue, and who is beingspoken to? how can you tell?
- think this mnologue is talking about friendship. and the diffrence between men with friends
and women with friends. The story basically focus on the topic about friendship.

2. What are the properties of correct behavior for a ''girl'' according to this speaker, and what
are the concequeces of defying that behavior? I feel that the author is trying to say that
there is a specific way that female should act and if they dont act in that manner their would
be concequences

3. There's a phrase thats repeated three times in this monologue. what is the sentence? Why is it
repeated, and how does it forshadow the very last lines of this mo nologue?

Never Take Anything for Granted

I strongly believe that you should never take anything for granted.
Some people say that everything happens for a reason, for istance. You might feel that you dont have enough or you feel like you deserve more than you can get, forget and let it go. If you are trying your best and things still dont go the way you want you should learn how appreciate what you have around you. Sometimes things can fall apart and feel like it is crashing down, but over time it will start to get better.

When your weak, when things may seem terrible, painful and unfair and every obstacle is being thrown your way you should never doubt your potential, strength, will power or heart.

I think its perfectly fine to market splenda. I feel there is a upside and a down side toward using splenda. besides all the alleged hazard and problems that it causes, it is somewhat better for people with diabetes and other sicknesses . I also think that moderation is the key to everything you do.

Journal Entry #5

This essay was written in 1971. What types of duties does Syfers describe as being performed by wives? In this essay Syfers believe that a wife should do everything for him as well as his children, while he does what he has to do.
To what degree do you believe these are still done primarily by women? I believe that in some household women still believe in and play these roles.
Have these or other things about the husband/wife relationship changed in the last 37 years? Yes I feel that the husband wife relationship have changed significantly in terms that the husband and wife are more equal now.
How would you describe Syfers’ writing style? Does she do things you would typically avoid in your own writing? Yes she does do certain things that I would try to avoid, but I think she did it and got to the point that she wanted to get across.
Syfers was reacting to a social structure that she felt at the time was unfair. What types of injustice or unfairness do you see in the world nowadays that you think should be addressed? I feel that certain jobs go to men that a woman can do better but because of there sex they feel that they can’t do the job as well as a man.
Syfers implies that men benefit from the servile position of women in the family. Who benefits from the injustices you see active in the world today? I think the rich benefits from the injustices I see active in the world today.

TEENAGE CANCER GENE TEST ( YES or NO )
I feel that its okay for you as a teen to want to get tested for the gene because it somewhat allows you to know what you can and cannot do. for example birth control somewhat causes breast cancer. So if you know you have the gene, that should tell you that it would be taking a chanceusing the pills. On the other hand i feel that taking the gene test so early in a childs life can be very detramental because if he or she knows that they have the gene, after worrying about actually getting it and taking step to not getting it. It will start to become a burden as if they already had they cancer. For example in the article when the girl found out that she had the genes of breast and ovarean cancer she wanted to remove them. Doing this would damage her life interm of being breastless and not being able to have any children because of the fact that she might get the cancer. i honestly feel that if you are going to get tested you should see a counselor a couple weeks before and after being tested.

Myths of Creativity

In your own words describe the myths of creativity?Creativity comes from creative types. I think this myth is saying that creativity come from creative people and it runs stronger in people who have a broad imagination. Money is a creativity motivator. I think this myth is saying that when people have an incentive like money or something they really want the creativity will also flow much easier. Time pressure fuels creativity. i think this myth is saying that once you are put under pressure it is hard to let your creativity flow. Fear forces break throughs. I think this myth is saying that when someone feels something on the inside it pushes or encoureges them to put there best into what they are doing. Compitetion beats collaboratio. I think this myth is tryying to say that when u are competeting you do not share your information with other which would inturn prevent the work from being as good as it would be if each personj shared their info to make the project on big succesful one. Streamline organization is creative organization. I think this myth is trying to say that when you down size the company it prohibits the workers from doing there best because all they can think about is if they are next.

How did Teresa Amabile , the Havard business School professor who studies creativity in the work place, design her research? I think she designed her reasearch on creativity by splitting it up into six diffrent parts. what kind of information was she looking for? I think she was looking information on what makes people creative and what prevents them from being creative. What seems especially surprising or interesting about her approach to research? I feel the the way she approach creativity was the most interesting about her research.

Who is the audiencefor Bill Breen's article? How can you tell. I think this article was meant for managers, workers, and regular individuals who wants to be more creative.

Writing #4

What does Bartholomae mean when he says that students must “invent the university” when they write in college? I think that the batholomae meant that when you right you have to write what you feel even if its not the norm.

What does Bartholomae suggest is a way for students to become “insiders” within academic discourse? He suggests to become insiders in academic discourse you must develop you own taste, and feelings for things, an original piece.

Summarize some of the differences between the two examples of student writing that Bartholomae examines, and Bartholomae’s opinion of these examples. In one of the examples Bartholomae says that the paper was not an elegant paper, but it seems seamless, tidy; here the discourse seems natural, smooth. You could reproduce this paper and hand it out to a class, and it would take a lot of prompting before the student’s sense something fishy. And the second one said. This writer is consistently and dramatically conscious of herself forming something to say out of what has been said and out of what she has been saying in the act of writing this paper. I feel that Bartholomae’s likes or appreciates one essay more than the other, because one meets his writing standards.

In the News #2 "Cloning"

(Yes or No)

In my opinion i feel that stem cell cloning should not be banned. I feel that these scientist are not doing it for fun or recreational use, they are doing it to find a cure for deaseases and other defects. It is also not like they are buying or using stem cells that were created from an individual. They are cloning them on their own. I also strongly believe that if this works they would be able to start cloning actual infants with the intent for esperimental use as well as organ donation. I think the reason why there is not a full force behind of this becuase, everyone is not in the same situation. For example if you child was born and was very sick and was going to die because it needed an organ but the waitng list was to long. Would you aprove of it then?

" The Storm "Revised

When I was about 14 years old it was said that a hurricane name Georges was going to hit the Virgin Islands. This was nothing new or of surprise because we experienced hurricanes all the time. It was all over the news, “Hurricane Georges heading toward the V.I. at a category two”. As usual everyone boarded up all their windows and doors. My family had tripled the work because my father owned apartments so he had to board those up as well. After a long night of waiting patiently for the storm, nothing came. Everyone was inflamed. The same day we took the boards off of all the windows of the apartments as well as the house. After a long days work we turned on the television and heard that the storm had turned around and would hit us in a couple of hours but this time as a category four.
We quickly hurried back outside in fear because we had already packed away the boards. My mother with furious but came to the conclusion that it would have been too dangerous to go outside and try to do it.
By this time it was really bad, we were all huddled up in one room waiting for it to be over.

Bush's Fence Faces Trouble

I think they should ask for more in dept information on the topic depending on the information giving they should let him finish the fence. i feel that he has already started, and has almost half of the work done. Eeven if they had their own agenda while building it he is going to be out of office very shortly. So it should be used for its correct purpose.
In my opionion i also feel that the money is not actually going to waste so always theres a strong firm reason or a better place for the money to go. I dont see why they shouldnt aloo the Bush admistration to finish this fence.

Chores ( YES or NO)

1. what experience did smiley have that changed her beliefs about chores?
- i think that smiley had the experience of not doing chores to be able to know how important doing chores really is.
*At what point in her essay does she describe this experience?
- She states that she herself wasn't responsible for doing chores, she would leave the house and mess and come back and found it spotless.
*What would the impact of that experience be on you. as a reader, if she had described it some place else in the essay?
-The experience had an impact on me because smiley was not just talking as a parent who did chores when she was young, but an adult who knows that chores makes you a better person.

2. What kinds of reasons and evidence does smiley offer to support her argument?
- She shows that she is not just speaking from what she thinks but what she went through while being young.
*Do you think these reasons and evidence to be authoritative?
- No i don't i think her reasons and evidence comes from experience.
*What does her choice of reason and evidence reveal about smiley's intended audience?
-i think smiley's audience were especially for children but for adults as well.

3. How does smiley use rhetorical questions to appeal to her readers?
- I think she does this so the readers can answer the questions for themselves so it doesnt seem as if she is just preaching on the topic of chores.

Journal #2

For this journal entry I chose “Living Life to the Fullest”. I feel this essay was very interesting and compelling because it brought up points that would have never crossed my mind. The tone of this poem in my opinion was directly placed between serious and reflective, because the author wrote about her feelings on death as well as life. Compared to the other essays they were somewhat all different in terms of the tone. I also recognized how the writing guidelines were followed in this essay. They also spoke about the belief of death. If I were to write about beliefs it would be about fear, courage, love or morality.

Journal 1

I decided to do my meta-analysis on a flyer I made. When my dog had puppies I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to keep all of them, but they weren’t the type of puppies that you would just give away. So I decided to make a flyer to advertize that I had Chows for sale. I came to the realization that if I did not do anything to sell these puppies I would have to keep them. I then designed a flyer with an exaggerating photo of the puppies making it hard to ignore it. I then contemplated on where I would place the flyer to get the best results, especially from kids and adults that cared for animals and loved fluffy cute puppies. After a week or so I then sold five of the seven puppies for $350.00 each. I think thinking about my writing in responding to a rhetorical situation is different from my usual ways of thinking because this easily came out rather than the hard thought crunching process.

Question #1

Page13:

List two specific examples from the reading to support your answer?

- I think Powell was trying to show that even though there was segregation and racism going on around him. He was not going to let it get the best of him, and stop him from succeeding in what he want6ed to achieve
- “I wanted above all to succeed in my army career, I did not intend to give away to self destructive behavior or rage no matter how I was provoked”. “If I was to be confined to one end of the playing field I was going to be a star on that part of the field.

2 What audience do you think Powell had in mind while writing?
Identify a specific audience, either one person or a group that you recommend reading this?

- I feel that Powell had audiences of both races because he not only wrote about
staying strong through adversity, but also about the unfairness of the white community.
- I believe that every individual especially African Americans should read this not because of the whole racism effect but, to read the way Powell viewed and dealt with situations.

3 Describe the writer as specifically as you can. What is your attitude toward him now that you have read this?
Does this represent any change in your attitude toward Powel?

- No this does not change my attitude toward him. I agree with his thought and applaud his determination

Page 19:

1) What purpose or purposes do you think Goldberg had in mind while writing?
Specify any one thing in the reading that helps you to identify your purpose?

- Let go everything when you write, begin with simple words to express what you have inside.

- I feel she catered to the people who often have a lot to say but find it very hard to put the words down on paper
- Their ideas on paper will benefit the most from reading this should read this not because of the whole racism effect, but the way to look and deal with situations.
- Audiences that are okay putting words on paper will probably not benefit as much as one that doesn’t.

- I feel that her subject is writing and writing is not as difficult as some may make it to be.
- I think her attitude was genuinely kind and open to sharing her thoughts and concepts to her readers.

In The News #1

Is it fair,

I feel that the beta blockers in the olympics should not be considered cheating. They have no side effects, and no risk of addiction. In my opinion i feel that the beta blockers does not enhance or able your ablity to do more. It simply just reduces anxiety and fright of doing what you have to. Unlike stearoids with enhances muscles strenght and gives you an advantage over the other player.
