- I think Powell was trying to show that even though there was segregation and racism going on around him. He was not going to let it get the best of him, and stop him from succeeding in what he want6ed to achieve
- “I wanted above all to succeed in my army career, I did not intend to give away to self destructive behavior or rage no matter how I was provoked”. “If I was to be confined to one end of the playing field I was going to be a star on that part of the field.

- I feel that Powell had audiences of both races because he not only wrote about
staying strong through adversity, but also about the unfairness of the white community.
- I believe that every individual especially African Americans should read this not because of the whole racism effect but, to read the way Powell viewed and dealt with situations.
3 Describe the writer as specifically as you can. What is your attitude toward him now that you have read this?
Does this represent any change in your attitude toward Powel?
- I feel that Powell is strong willed and knows what he wants, and realizes he has to do what he has to get there
- No this does not change my attitude toward him. I agree with his thought and applaud his determination

- I feel that Goldberg was trying to show that writing is as hard as you make it and once you let go and relax the words would just pour out unto the paper.
- Let go everything when you write, begin with simple words to express what you have inside.
2) What audience do you think she had in mind while writing

What audiences might not benefit?
- I feel she catered to the people who often have a lot to say but find it very hard to put the words down on paper
- Their ideas on paper will benefit the most from reading this should read this not because of the whole racism effect, but the way to look and deal with situations.
- Audiences that are okay putting words on paper will probably not benefit as much as one that doesn’t.
3) What is her subject?
What is her attitude toward the subject?
- I feel that her subject is writing and writing is not as difficult as some may make it to be.
- I think her attitude was genuinely kind and open to sharing her thoughts and concepts to her readers.
